THE NAME...
I thought naming my company would be one of the more fun aspects of starting a new business, I was wrong. In this day and age, you not only have to consider if another company is using the same name, but you have to consider if the domain name is free, if Facebook, Twitter or YouTube pages are available and if you Google the name, you want to make sure your name is not urban slang for something better left in a road-side bathroom.
I considered a lot of different ideas when coming up with the name; pixel-this and digital-that. I looked at movies, music and games that inspired me. During this whole process, I came to the conclusion that it has to be a name that relates to me, as I’m the one who’s going to be spending so much time with it. So when I was wracking my brain I realized that a lot of important events in my life occurred in a year that ended in 4. I can name a major milestone per decade, starting even before I was born… 1964 – This is the year my older sister was born. That might not seem significant to a video game publisher, but I think it was. She took the pressure off of me with my parents. All of their expectations for proper development milestones were focused on her. By the time I came along, they were much more relaxed and as a result, they went easier on me and left me to my own devices. I think this was really the birth of my independent spirit and why I always gravitated towards entrepreneurial endeavors. 1974 – This is the year that I spent over two weeks in hospital. I was young at the time so i don’t remember much, but I was admitted into hospital with both of my eyes swollen shut and my throat about to do the same. It turned out to be an allergic reaction, but one positive note from this experience is that during my recovery I discovered a love of comic books, so it wasn't all bad. 1984 – The year…what can I say about this year? The year George Orwell’s dystopic future finally arrives. The year Apple changed the world of computing with Macintosh and there was King’s Quest, Ghostbusters and more personally, the year I graduated high school. Although I went on to CEGEP (It’s a Quebec thing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CEGEP) and then university, my best friends are still those that I made in high school. I also consider myself a child of the 80’s and I love the music, movies and games from that decade to this day. 1994 – The year I opened up my second retail video game store back in my home town. I had my own store buying, renting and trading video games just 5 minutes from where I grew up wishing there was a store like this near me. I also got married in 1994 and my wife has been very supportive of all of my crazy ventures. 2004 – The year my son was born. The funny thing is that I wasn’t even there for the birth. Neither was my wife. Confused? He’s adopted. To say that this little man has changed my life would be the biggest understatement of them all. There was also a second birth that year - my new game publishing company that I was with for over 9 years until I broke away and started this company. So that’s why I chose “Ends in Four Games”. I’m hopeful that I will be able to add 2014 to this list as a year where my company took off and released several hit games. BACK<< |
